On January 18, 1968, during his 90th combat mission, Capt. Smith's (then Lt.) fate took a dramatic turn. Forced to eject over North Vietnam, he showcased his exceptional skills as an aviator by shooting down a MIG-17 in aerial combat before his own aircraft was downed. Capt.
